Unattended Appointments
Nationally, patients not attending
appointments which have been booked
in advance, has caused enormous
waste.
In the past, Summerhill Surgery has
had approximately 50 wasted
appointments each week, equating to
about 17 hours of clinician’s time.
If you have an appointment with this
surgery and are unable to attend,
not only it is it impolite not to
attend and not to notify the surgery
of said non-attendance, but is
wasteful of clinician’s time and
taxpayers money, as well as
inhibiting other individuals
receiving the consultation that you
do not attend.
In an attempt to reduce the number
of unattended appointments
Summerhill Surgery introduced a
robust Did Not Attend policy in
2006. The surgery writes to every
patient who failed to attend a
booked appointment. For any patient
who fails to attend three booked
appointments in a 12 month period,
consideration is be given to
removing them from our list of
registered patients.
This policy is reaping rewards. In a
comparison between the same week in
2006 and 2007 (2nd week of March)
the number of “DNAs” had dropped
from 48 to 16 – a reduction of 67%.
As a result of this success, with
effect from 1 June 2007, Summerhill
Surgery will include any notified
failed attendances of hospital
(secondary care) appointments in our
policy of giving consideration to
the removal from the practice list
of any patient who fails to attend
three appointments in a 12 month
period.
